Computer networking, also known as data communications (datacom) is the practice of linking together two or more computer systems or devices for the purpose of exchanging data. Computer networking is considered a sub-discipline of telecommunications, computer science, information technology and/or computer engineering because it is greatly dependent on the theoretical and practical application of the previously mentioned disciplines.
There are three types of networks. These are the internet, intranet and the extranet. The internet is a global system of interconnected networks of computers. These networks uses Internet Protocol Suite, either TCP or IP, to be able to serve billions of computer users all over the world. The intranet, on the other hand, is a private computer network. Although the intranet uses Internet Protocol technologies, that information are secured within the organization. The extranet is an extension of
a company’s intranet. This is a computer network which allows access to the organizations intranet from the outside. Usually used for business and educational purposes, the extranet allows users from outside the company to access certain information and data. The extranet is especially helpful to vendors, partner, and suppliers.
There are different methods of networking computers. One method is called LAN or local area network. This is a small network of computers contained within a small geographical
area. A network of computers within a particular building is an example of a local area network. Another example of network is metropolitan area network or MAN, this method of networking is used for medium sized area such as cities or states. Wide area network or WAN, another way of networking computers, is a larger network used to cover larger geographic areas. Wireless LANs and WANs are, as the name suggests, similar to WAN and LAN only wireless.
Different kinds of materials are used to interconnect computers. These materials could include twisted-pair copper wire cables, coaxial cables, optical fibers, and power lines. Nowadays, wireless technologies are also commonly used.
In computer networking, computers can be separated by a small distance or great distances. The Bluetooth technology for example only allows a few meters of distance while connections through the internet can reach the whole world.
